Three students came away with awards between the two conferences.
At the ASBMB, seniors Bailey Cook and Vesper Fraunfelter received honorable mention prizes in the undergraduate research poster competition. This means they placed in the top four of around 50 total presenters nationwide in their respective scientific categories.
Cook’s project was entitled “A Phosphorylation Mimic at the G[alpha]12 N-terminus Inhibits Palmitoylation and Signaling to Serum Response Factor.” Fraunfelter’s was entitled “Heterologous Expression of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATP Synthase in E. coli to Facilitate Antibiotic Discovery.”
Both are members of the NC GlaxoSmithKline Scholars Program at UNC Asheville, which sponsored both of their research projects. Fraunfelter received additional funding through National Institute of Health grants awarded to associate professor Amanda Wolfe.
At the ASBC, senior Liz Companion received a poster presentation award from the Botanical Society of America for her project “Reproductive output of closely-related sympatric pitcher plants (Sarracenia spp.) and their morphological hybrids.”
Eighteen total students and five faculty members represented UNC Asheville in Winston-Salem, while five students and two faculty members traveled to Seattle.
