Students in ART 218 Painting I, taught by Assistant Professor of Art Suzanne Dittenber, have been spending more of their class time working en plein air.

"For this project, we focused on techniques used to depict transparent objects. I arranged a still life setup outdoors, incorporating numerous transparent or translucent objects such as glass bottles filled with water and colored gel filter sheets."

"Students then were free to rearrange and adjust the setup to accommodate their individual vision for their painting."

"This is a project that normally would take place indoors, but due to COVID, I’ve adapted a number of my assignments so painting projects can take place outside."

"A cool result — students were able to incorporate the landscape in the background of their still life painting, touching on two genres simultaneously."
