UNC Asheville’s AMS Chapter strives to create “a safe and welcoming place for Atmospheric Science majors or anyone who is interested in the weather to socialize and make new friends.” They meet every other week, offering both fun, social meetings and “preparatory” meetings, which help prepare members for life after undergrad, whether that be through alumni speakers, or hosting the Southern Appalachian Weather and Climate Workshop each year. Finally, they engage in community outreach whenever possible, including through the Junior Bulldogs program, which brings local middle schoolers to campus for presentations and interactive demonstrations. The Women in STEM Club strives to provide a welcoming environment for students in STEM majors across campus. They also help members grow in their career goals, as well as help them understand hurdles women in STEM fields have had to overcome. They try to implement a mix of fun and career/academic related activities into their meetings, including game nights, resume and cover letter nights, and presentations from speakers in STEM fields. They engage in community outreach through the AVID Tutoring program, and working with first generation students in Asheville schools. The Aspiring Healthcare Professionals Club hopes to help prepare students to be successful in healthcare fields by providing them with information on career and educational opportunities. They have enjoyed connecting with like-minded students on campus. They have several events planned for this semester, including one around National Handwashing Day where the UNC Asheville community can come and make their own bar of soap. The Society of Physics Students (SPS) aims to build a community around physics and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in general, and support members in their educational and career journeys. At their monthly meetings, they offer free pizza, a presentation on a physics figure they believe has not received the notoriety they deserve, and talk about upcoming events members can get involved in. Some of those offerings include movie nights, physics workshops, collaborations with other clubs, and talks from professors and guest speakers. They engage with the greater Asheville community by participating in the Junior Bulldogs program, where they do physics demonstrations with middle schoolers.
