All first year students are required to take a few classes that help them acclimate to the college classroom and gain skills needed for the rest of their college careers: First Year Seminar (FYS 178), Academic Writing and Critical Inquiry, and Humanities. The First Year Showcase is a celebration of first-year student work completed as part of those classes.
The projects are multi-modal, ranging from podcasts, original music, presentations, videos, infographics, fine art, poetry, essays and more. Below is a selection of the amazing work presented by the students.

Wade Farley and Josiah Szobody crafted handmade guitars using the tools and expertise available in UNC Asheville's STEAM studios. They were involved in every step, from designing to woodworking.
Sunshyne Shirley created an autoethnography showing her "core four" family members with label words covering their eyes, ears, and mouth in a see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil style to show the labels placed on her family and the changes that occurred between when the photo was taken and now.
Jacob Stimac delved into the political ideas and structures shown in the "Star Wars" franchise to analyze the way they do, or do not, work.
"Art has always played a crucial role in shaping cultures, challenging norms, and reflecting the human experience. However, despite its undeniable significance, the art world is not immune to issues of inequality," Nia Vines begins in her podcast.
