This semester of Fall 2021, UNC Asheville is saying farewell to remarkable staff and faculty members who have made a lasting impact on our university, from their work in the classroom and all across campus.
Rebecca Bruce, interim director of engineering programs and visiting professor, has been at UNC Asheville for 24 years. She says she has most enjoyed her colleagues during her time here.
Fun Fact: Bruce has served as interim director of engineering twice.
Joy Flora, budget and auxiliary administrative liaison, has worked at UNC Asheville for 10 years. Flora says she most enjoyed the variety of things she did within her job, and the people she worked with.
Fun Fact: Flora has visited 53 of 63 National Parks, leaving only 10 more to go in retirement!
Bill Haggard, vice chancellor for student affairs, has worked at UNC Asheville for 16 years, and worked in higher education for 37 years. Haggard is widely recognized for his skill, commitment to equity, critical insight, and devotion to creating a sense of belonging for students.
Fun Fact: The Student Life Porch in Highsmith Student Union was renamed the Haggard Student Life Porch in honor of his service to the University.
Sammy Hughes, library serials assistant, has worked at UNC Asheville for 33 years. He has particularly enjoyed checking in serials and periodicals; shelving newspapers and magazines and journals; and going to the bookdrop.
Fun Fact: Hughes' favorite things after many years are still balloons, kites, and butterflies.
Diane Morgan, program assistant for the Department of Engineering, has worked at UNC Asheville for 22 years. She says she's most enjoyed the interesting people she's worked with over the years, and how much they care about their work.
Fun Fact: Morgan has been selling eggs for 17 years, and along with chickens, her farm has included a donkey and three goats.
Bonnie Parker, director of study abroad, has been at UNC Asheville for 15 years. Parker says she loved to see the students after they studied abroad because these experiences could be so transformative and life-changing. "It was a joy to actually see the impact."
Fun Fact: Parker's first job was teaching ESL in Turkey.
Susan Tripp, IT applications analyst, has been at UNC Asheville for 8 years. Tripp has enjoyed the university atmosphere, and the people she has worked with.
Fun Fact: Tripp says she will never run out of craft project.
