UNC Asheville faculty pride themselves on offering unique opportunities for students to expand their learning in a variety of ways – in the studio, in the lab, and looking ahead to life after college. Read on for a preview of several examples of topics students will tackle during the fall 2023 semester, from the Ancient Mediterranean to our earth’s atmosphere.
See a class you’re dying to take, but it’s not in your major? Not to worry! Most of these classes don’t require prerequisites and are open to students of all class levels and majors.
The course will touch on topics such as land & water resources, land & marine animal management, and responses to man-made and natural disasters. Open to juniors and seniors of all majors.
In this class, students will address issues of identity, materiality, and art by designing and constructing multiple sculptures intended to be worn. Open to students of all years and areas of study. No prerequisites.
Students will learn how to transition to life after college. Topics include, but are not limited to, salary negotiation, navigating workplace politics, business acumen, asking and receiving feedback, advocating for yourself, and taking ownership of professional development. The course is designed for seniors, but juniors may be considered. Upperclassmen of all majors are encouraged to enroll.
Surveying the social construction of crime, the legal conceptualization of crime, the nature and extent of crime, trends in crime and criminality over time, theoretical models on the causes of crime, types of crime, and the criminal justice response from policing, to trial, to incarceration. Open to students of all years and areas of study. No prerequisites.
This combination of ATMS 103: Intro to Meteorology and ATMS 111: Intro to Meteorology Lab provides a solid education to students of any major about the Earth's atmosphere, complete with fun, hands-on outdoor activities.
Why are some groups able to form labor unions or cooperatives while others are stuck in perpetual competition? Why do we buy things we don’t want? Why, in an economy rooted in self-interest, do we give to charity, or fight climate change, or trust our neighbors? ‘Economic Oddities’ is intended to give students a preview of several ways in which economics deals with the unexpected. No prerequisites.
