Meet Isaiah Green, UNC Asheville senior, entrepreneur, and president of the UNC System's Association of Student Governments. This year, Isaiah will take us through his final semesters on campus in a series of letters, chronicling an unusual but exciting time for him and everyone at UNC Asheville.

Hi Friend,

My name is Isaiah and I am a senior at UNC Asheville.

In May 2021, I will graduate from UNC Asheville with my degree in management. Throughout the year, I will share updates about my senior year and stories from my friends across campus.

I am learning remotely this fall. I think it is the small, close-knit campus community that has made it work for me. I know my professors really well and stay engaged with my classmates via Zoom. It makes me feel connected from afar! Throughout my time at UNC Asheville, I've taken advantage of internships and have been able to continue those virtually this year. This fall, I am working with Venture Asheville to start work on a student incubator that aligns with the great startup community based in Asheville.

Between the internship experience and my management classes, I'm taking all of these lessons and applying them to my own skateboard fashion retail business, Full Circle Nation LLC. You can check out this recent video to learn more about me and my business: Original Minds - Isaiah Green Video

Dear Friend,

My name is Isaiah Green. In May 2021, I will graduate from UNC Asheville with a degree in management.

I know that this is going to be a unique year for myself and for my fellow students, and I am excited to share my senior year with you.

I appreciate UNC Asheville’s small campus community, where you can get to know people really well and easily get involved with campus organizations.

During my freshman year, I joined the Student Government Association (SGA). As a sophomore, I was elected SGA President, becoming the youngest President in UNC System history. I enjoyed the opportunity to experience system-wide meetings and promote new initiatives on campus. A highlight from that role was managing a staff of thirty student leaders to draft a five-year strategic plan focused on sustainability.

In my role as student body president, I served on the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees alongside my Dad, Maurice Green. It was very meaningful to sit beside him during Board meetings and to work on projects together. Here are a few photos of us during my Board of Trustees’ induction ceremony

As an on-campus leader, I saw firsthand the immense impact donor support had on my fellow students when we needed to complete our courses remotely due to COVID-19 last spring. Thank you to those who gave to funds like the Student Emergency Fund, which provided support to students facing sudden job loss or health crises!

In the spring of 2020, I was elected President of UNC System’s Association of Student Governments. This role has given me an inside look at the opportunities and needs of students across the system, representing more than 238,000 students across all 17 institutions. Over the summer, I worked with the UNC System Board of Governors, tackling new topics each week. This fall, I am looking forward to focusing my time on providing more mental health resources for students.

It is clear that our UNC Asheville students are going to continue to need extra support to thrive during these challenging times. Please consider making your annual gift to an area of campus that means the most to you.

Whether it is scholarship support, access to healthy and free food through the Food Equity Initiative, or funding for technology that enables flexible work through the Remote Technology Fund, a gift to any area on campus will have an immense impact on UNC Asheville students.

Hi Friend,

I just finished my fall projects and am officially on winter break!

UNC Asheville students wrapped up their semester early and get to spend extra time with their families over the holiday season.

Looking back at this semester, my favorite fall semester class was a Strategic Management & Policy course led by Paul McAfee. The class spent time in teams in an online simulation, competing against the other teams to run the best footwear company in the class. As this is what I actually want to do as a career, it was a great time seeing a simulated version of the industry from a 30,000-foot level.

I wrapped up my internship at Venture Asheville a few weeks ago. During my internship, I tracked the success and growth of six entrepreneurs who received Venture Asheville micro-grant funds. The most important thing I learned during that time was how other companies across a wide range of industries are responding to COVID-19 and how they've had to change their business plans throughout the year.

For example, one of the entrepreneurs is running a sustainable hand sanitizer company and thought people would desire outside dispensers. However, what he discovered was that the best places to put and sell dispensers are at the entrances and exits of large stores and grocery stores.

Learning how these companies respond to the rapidly changing needs of their consumers is going to be useful to me in my future business career!

I am looking forward to spending my winter break with my family and to get the chance to relax. I'll be sure to share an update over the break about all of the great work we did through the Association of Student Governments this fall.

Hi Friend,

This holiday season, I've been reflecting on all of the exciting work we accomplished as part of the UNC System’s Association of Student Governments (UNC ASG). I've enjoyed my role as President and wanted to share a bit more about what we've accomplished!

The UNC Association of Student Governments (UNC ASG) is a student-led organization committed to furthering educational opportunities and advocating for the nearly 250,000 students in the UNC System.

Over the fall semester, I had the opportunity to work alongside an excellent Student Executive Board and focused on projects featured in my election platform. Here are a few highlights:

Advocacy Work: In early November, we hosted a system-wide Student Advocacy Week, bringing more than 40 students together for conversations with state legislators. During these conversations, we advocated for an increase in funding for statewide financial aid programs and our student emergency funds, as well as the inclusion of a student representative to vote on the UNC Board of Governors.
Virtual Leadership: We hosted three all-virtual General Assembly meetings, connecting more than 70 students across the state. We proved that we can accomplish good work together even when we have to coordinate everything remotely!
Equity Initiatives: We evaluated our internal governing documents to make sure UNC ASG is as inclusive as possible for future administrations. A group we focused on this fall was graduate and professional students from across the system, ensuring they had an equitable voice in our work.

Next semester, we are looking to implement Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training for all members of our General Assembly. It's important for our student representatives to understand how to thoughtfully advocate for all students within the UNC System, including the ones who don't look like them or come from different backgrounds. This helps us best serve all students within North Carolina.

I will continue to share updates on my spring semester and look forward to connecting with you again in 2021!
