Tomberlin keeps things asynchronous, but has a steady online presence. “I’m always trying to think of new ways that I can cultivate a better online community. I try to show that I’m engaged by participating regularly since they can’t see me. I just think as an instructor, you have to be purposeful in that."
Participants in the pilot program are also purposeful in sharing their learning with the rest of the faculty. Even during a busy Maymester, Ghidina and Tomberlin both led well-attended online faculty workshops.
“Even though it has been a chaotic time to get started, I hope that people can still appreciate some of the benefits of online learning,” said Tomberlin. “Even when we’re teaching in person, it’s good to have a hybrid component that extends the curriculum, especially since we’ve all put in so much effort to get our online classes together.”
While Tomberlin’s and Ghidina’s courses will end for this year as Maymester comes to a close, Wingert’s Functional Anatomy class, and two other pilot courses, Video Game Studies, and Nature of Mathematics all begin on June 8.
